![]() ![]() But, as we have grown accustomed to with HBO, Mare of Easttown is not just a suspense story. She is Mare Sheehan, a small-town Pennsylvania detective assigned to investigate a local murder. We will follow the daily life of a mature woman whose face bears the marks of a not entirely kind existential development. No longer the most naïve girl in town, Winslet pours herself into a performance that eschews make-up and hairstyles, appearing in the flesh to offer one of the most harrowing roles of her career. And so she has done by starring in Mare of Easttown (2021), a new seven-episode miniseries that combines crime suspense with intense drama, coming to HBO and HBO GO this April for your enjoyment. Of course, she is no longer the unblemished girl of the period films of twenty-five years ago, but an actress who still challenges herself. Time has passed, and there is no doubt that Kate Winslet remains at her peak. It is worth mentioning that she took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Miniseries in 2012 for Mildred Pierce. The HBO production, which premiered in 2011, focuses on the relationship between the protagonist, Mildred (Kate Winslet) and her daughter Veda (Evan Rachel Wood) during the American Great Depression. On the television side, Mildred Pierce has been one of her most notable shows so far. In addition, she won the Best Actress award at the Golden Globes, where she also took the prize for Best Supporting Actress in 2016 for Steve Jobs. Although The Reader boasted a stellar cast (Ralph Fiennes, for example) and was set a few years after World War II (in other words, “period”), the film’s dramatic tone offered Winslet a considerable acting challenge. In fact, it was her performance in The Reader, direct by Stephen Daldry, which earned her the Oscar for Best Actress. This huge hit could have type-cast her as a pretty girl perfect for romantic or period movies, but the actress has always sought out a different type of film, working with such filmmakers as Jane Campion in Holy Smoke (1999), Michael Apted in Enigma (2001) and Michel Gondry in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind(2004). But of course, the pinnacle of her fame came in 1997 with Titanic, where she played another naïve, well-mannered young woman with a rebellious streak, who ends up falling in love with a penniless yet charming artist, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. It is easier to imagine her as a young lady with an innocent air in a period piece, the perfect fit for Sense and Sensibility in 1995. This is perhaps one of the earliest images we may have of her, from way back in 1994, under the direction of Peter Jackson (yes, that same Peter Jackson from the epic The Lord of the Rings) in the small but brilliantly dark Heavenly Creatures. They are nymphs-young, pretty, innocent-looking-they leap and laugh, and no one would ever believe that they will soon conceive a horrendous crime. Kate Winslet is running through the woods with her friend.
